Fasting May Help Treat Chronic Epididymitis in the Future

In recent years, fasting programs have gained public and scientific attention, but it should not be regarded as a trend. In a study published by Cell, Mount Sinai researchers found that fasting reduces inflammation, improves chronic inflammatory diseases, and does not affect the immune system's response to acute infections.

Although acute inflammation is a normal immune process that helps to resist infection, a moderate inflammatory response is beneficial to the human body when bacteria and viruses invade. But if the body inflammation response is too high for a long time, it will not only damage health but also increase the risk of heart disease and cancer.

Current studies on food and inflammatory response suggest that a reasonable diet can reduce the body's chronic inflammatory response. When we have inflammation in the body, we should eat less food containing saturated fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids, because these substances can promote the occurrence and development of body inflammation.

The content of saturated fatty acids in rapeseed oil and red meat is relatively high. A lot of foods like pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, corn kernels, walnuts, soybeans, and malt are also rich in omega-6 fatty acids and should be avoided as far as possible when inflammation occurs. On the contrary, omega-3 fatty acids in foods can alleviate and inhibit inflammation, such as deep-sea fish, flaxseed, perilla seed, and so on.

"Caloric restriction is known to improve inflammation and autoimmune diseases, but the mechanism of reducing caloric intake to control inflammation is poorly understood," Dr. Merad and his colleagues used human and mouse immune cells to do the research, and the results showed that intermittent fasting reduced the release of pro-inflammatory cells called "monocytes" in the blood circulation. Further studies have shown that during fasting, these cells enter sleep mode and are less sensitive than monocytes found in feeders.

"Monocytes are highly inflammatory immune cells that can cause serious tissue damage, and because of human eating habits over the last few centuries, blood circulation has increased in people," Dr. Mellard said. "Considering the wide range of diseases caused by chronic inflammation and the increasing number of patients affected by these diseases, there is great potential to study the anti-inflammatory effects of fasting," said lead author Dr. Stefan Jordan.

Researchers plan to continue to try to decipher the molecular mechanism of fasting in improving inflammatory diseases, which may lead to new preventive treatment strategies for many human diseases. Some inflammation treatment is relatively complicated, and the treatment duration is relatively long, which requires high cooperation of patients, such as epididymitis, which is a common disease of non-specific infection of the male reproductive system and is more common in young and middle-aged people.

If targeted treatment is not available, it is difficult to achieve the effect. With different pathogens, drug resistance is also different, easily lead to repeated attacks of disease. When the drug resistance of epididymis decreases due to various reasons, pathogens can invade epididymis and cause inflammation.

Therefore, in the future, patients may improve chronic genitourinary system inflammation by fasting, and they can also cooperate with Diuretic and Anti-inflammatory Pill, a powerful anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory Chinese herbal medicine. Treatment can kill all pathogens causing inflammation without any side effects on the human body.
