Chronic Prostatitis Recurs Again? 5 Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Formulas for Treating Prostate Diseases

Chronic prostatitis is a common urinary system disease among men, and many patients are trapped in the dilemma of “long-term treatment with frequent relapse.” Although the symptoms had improved before, after a short time, discomfort such as frequent urination, urgent urination, and perineal distension returns. This not only affects normal life but also causes great physical and mental distress. Why does this happen?

From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the recurrence of chronic prostatitis is often related to the failure to accurately target the underlying cause and the incomplete regulation of the body during treatment.

TCM Herbal Formulas to Prevent Chronic Prostatitis Recurrence

The TCM principle of "syndrome differentiation and treatment" offers unique advantages in managing chronic prostatitis. It emphasizes individualized treatment based on the patient’s specific symptoms and constitution, allowing precise classification and customized prescriptions that can not only relieve symptoms effectively but also regulate the body at its root, thereby reducing the recurrence rate.

5 Common TCM Syndrome Types of Chronic Prostatitis

1. Damp-heat flowing downward type:

Patients often experience frequent, urgent, and painful urination; yellow urine; a burning sensation in the urethra; distending pain or discomfort in the perineum and lower abdomen; and a red tongue with yellow greasy coating.

2. Qi stagnation and blood stasis type:

Main symptoms include stabbing or distending pain in the perineum, lower abdomen, or lumbosacral area, with the pain location fixed and disease course prolonged. The tongue appears dark with blood stasis spots.

3. Damp-heat with blood stasis obstruction type:

This combines features of both damp-heat and qi stagnation with blood stasis—showing symptoms like frequent, urgent, and painful urination together with stabbing pain or blockage in the perineum and related areas.

4. Kidney yin deficiency type:

Besides urination discomfort (frequent and urgent urination), patients also present with soreness and weakness in the waist and knees, dizziness, tinnitus, insomnia, vivid dreams, nocturnal emission, and night sweats. The tongue is red with little coating.

5. Kidney yang deficiency type:

Common symptoms include frequent urination (especially at night), clear and long urine, cold pain in the waist and knees, aversion to cold with cold limbs, decreased sexual function, and a pale tongue with white coating.

Usage Precautions and Health Guidance

1. Syndrome differentiation first:

Chronic prostatitis has complex syndrome types. The same symptom may correspond to different syndromes in different individuals. Therefore, before using TCM formulas, patients must consult a qualified TCM physician for an accurate diagnosis through inspection, listening, inquiry, and palpation. Only then can medication be accurate and effective—self-medication is not advised.

2. Combined treatment:

In treating chronic prostatitis, TCM is not used in isolation. When necessary, it can be combined with Western medicine such as antibiotics or α-blockers for synergistic effects. This approach can enhance therapeutic outcomes, reduce the dosage of Western medicine, and lower the risk of drug resistance—but combined use must be guided by a physician.

3. Lifestyle adjustments:

Lifestyle habits are crucial in treating and preventing relapse of chronic prostatitis. Patients should avoid prolonged sitting and take breaks to move regularly to reduce pressure on the prostate; avoid spicy food and alcohol, which may worsen inflammation; maintain regular routines and sufficient sleep; take warm sitz baths to promote blood circulation in the prostate; and perform Kegel exercises to strengthen pelvic floor muscles and improve urination.

The recurrence of chronic prostatitis indeed brings great distress to patients. However, the TCM "three-in-one" management model of syndrome differentiation – prescription selection – health regulation provides an effective approach to this problem. Through precise diagnosis, the use of appropriate herbal formulas, and good lifestyle habits, recurrence can be significantly reduced and quality of life improved.

If your chronic prostatitis symptoms recur frequently, be sure to seek medical treatment at a qualified institution and receive guidance from a professional TCM practitioner. Do not self-prescribe or take random herbs, as this may delay recovery or cause adverse effects.
