Appropriate Low to Moderate - Intensity Exercise Reduces the Risk of Cystitis

We already know that regular exercise reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, bowel cancer, breast cancer, and depression. A new Danish study finds that physical exercise with low to moderate-intensity can also significantly reduce the risk of bacterial infections.

Dr. Catherine Pape Madsen, a researcher at the University of Alburg, Denmark, and her team analyzed the exercise time and health status of 18874 participants in the North Denmark Health Survey from 2007 to 2010 and assessed the risk of bacterial infection.
In the one-year follow-up survey, 5368 participants went to medical institutions to prescribe one or more antibiotics. The results showed that compared with sedentary participants, the risk of bacterial infection was reduced by 10% in those who did low-intensity exercise in leisure time, while the risk of cystitis(urinary tract infection) was reduced by 32% and 21% in those who did low to moderate-intensity exercise, respectively.
Dr. Madsen said lack of physical activity had been identified by the World Health Organization as the fourth leading risk factor for early death. Low to moderate-intensity exercise can not only reduce the risk of bacterial infection but also reduce the incidence of various diseases and the risk of early death.

The number of immune cells decreased by 33% in those who exercised five times a week but did not change in those who exercised three times a week. Moderate exercise is aerobic exercise three times a week. High-intensity and intensive exercise five or more times a week, will reduce immunity.
