Half of Infertility Cases Are Tubal-Related: TCM Is Effective

Among the many factors leading to infertility, problems with the fallopian tubes account for a significant proportion. This is undoubtedly a daunting obstacle for many couples eager to have a baby. However, it is reassuring that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers unique insights and significant efficacy in treating tubal infertility.

The fallopian tubes are an essential part of the female reproductive system, acting like a bridge connecting the ovaries and the uterus. Each month, after the ovaries release an egg, the fimbriae at the end of the fallopian tube capture the egg and transport it into the tube.

In the fallopian tube, the egg awaits the arrival of sperm, where fertilization occurs to form a fertilized egg. Subsequently, the fertilized egg moves towards the uterine cavity, aided by the tube's peristalsis and ciliary action, and eventually implants to develop.

Suppose problems arise in the fallopian tubes, such as blockage, adhesions, or hydrosalpinx. In that case, they can impede the meeting of the egg and sperm and the transport of the fertilized egg, leading to infertility.

Common causes of tubal infertility:

1. Inflammatory infections

Pelvic inflammatory disease is one of the primary causes of fallopian tube problems. Pathogens such as bacteria, mycoplasma, and chlamydia can ascend through the reproductive tract, causing inflammation in the fallopian tubes. Prolonged inflammatory irritation can lead to adhesions, blockages, or hydrosalpinx in the tubes.

2. Surgical damage

Abdominal surgeries, such as appendectomy or cesarean section, may damage the fallopian tubes if not performed correctly or if recovery is poor, affecting their function.

3. Congenital Developmental Abnormalities

In rare cases, the fallopian tubes may have congenital developmental issues, such as being too long, too narrow, or curved; these structural abnormalities can also affect conception.

How does Traditional Chinese Medicine treat this?

TCM treatment addresses not only the local issues of the fallopian tubes but also takes a holistic approach to regulate the patient's body functions, improve the endocrine environment, and increase the chances of conception. The main methods include:

1. Herbal Medicine

Under medical guidance, patients can consult Dr. Lee's TCM Clinic and take the Fuyan Pill, which has blood-activating and stasis-resolving effects. This method improves the circulation of qi and blood in the body, promotes follicle development and ovulation, and increases the chances of conception.

2. Acupuncture Therapy

Specific acupoints along certain meridians, such as Sanyinjiao and Zusanli, are selected for treatment using traditional acupuncture techniques. Acupuncture can regulate the function of the endocrine system, alleviate discomfort caused by fallopian tube spasms, and promote blood circulation, helping restore the regular physiological activity of the fallopian tubes.

3. Moxibustion Therapy

Moxibustion is performed on acupoints like Guanyuan and Qihai using moxa sticks to stimulate the areas gently. Moxibustion warms the lower body, promotes the flow of qi and blood, and is effective for infertility caused by cold and damp stagnation.

4. Acupoint Thread Embedding

This treatment method involves embedding medical protein threads beneath selected acupoints to provide long-term stimulation to local tissues. The technique utilizes the slow release of medication from the threads to enhance the body's immunity and stabilize the reproductive system's internal environment.

TCM treatment for tubal infertility typically requires a certain amount of time, and patients need to be patient and consistent with their treatment, avoiding discontinuation. Patients should also maintain a positive mood and prevent excessive fatigue and mental stress.

During treatment, patients should ensure adequate sleep and avoid overexertion to facilitate recovery. It is also essential to pay attention to dietary nourishment, opting for nutritious and easily digestible foods, such as red date millet porridge and yam lotus seed soup, which can aid recovery.

Overall, TCM treatment for tubal infertility may not be suitable for all patients. In some instances, it may be necessary to combine it with Western medicine surgeries or assisted reproductive technologies. Nonetheless, the unique role of TCM in this field should not be overlooked. It is hoped that more infertility patients can understand and choose suitable treatment methods to realize their dream of having a baby as soon as possible.
